3.8. General standards for the protection of people and the environment are usually set out in national policy or in legislation. The regulatory body has to develop regulatory requirements specific to each type of disposal facility for radioactive waste, including each type that is envisaged, on the basis of national policy and with due regard to the safety objective and criteria set out in para. 2.15. The regulatory body has to provide guidance on the interpretation of the national legislation and regulatory requirements, as necessary, and guidance on what is expected of the operator in respect of each individual disposal facility.
