5.15. A realistic assessment is aimed at providing an indication of the most likely behaviour of the disposal system. In a conservative assessment, the ability of the disposal system to provide protection is deliberately underestimated. If a conservative approach is taken, the assessment should describe the justification for labelling certain parameter values or assumptions as conservative and quantitative estimates of the degree of conservatism should be provided, if possible. Further recommendations on the use of conservative assumptions and on assigning conservative values to parameters are provided in para. 5.67.
