1.8. The term ‘disposal’ refers to the emplacement of radioactive waste into a facility or a location with no intention of retrieving the waste1. Disposal options are designed to contain the waste by means of passive engineered and natural features and to isolate it from the accessible biosphere to the extent necessitated by the associated hazard. The term disposal implies that retrieval is not intended;it does not mean that retrieval is not possible.

1.8. ‘처분1’이라는 용어는 방사성폐기물을 회수할 의도 없이 해당 폐기물을 시설 또는 장소에 정치(定置)하는 행위를 말한다. 처리 방안은 수동적인 공학적·자연적 특성을 통해 폐기물을 보관하고 관련된 위험에 따라 필요한 수준으로 접근이 용이한 생물권으로부터 폐기물을 격리할 수 있도록 계획된다. 처분이라는 단어는 회수할 목적은 없음을 시사한다. 그렇다고 해서 회수가 불가능하다는 의미는 아니다.
